A
Walking Holiday in the Northwest Tip of Austria
This
area above the Bodensee is a little known walking destination, at
least to non Austrians! It is a very pretty region, not of the
highest Alps, but of forests and smaller pre-alp mountains with
their associated Wanderweg and Bergweg footpaths. You will
certainly be away from the mainstay of Alpine tourism, yet you
will still get great Alpine views across the main chains. The tour
offers quality Alpine walking, with the use of cable cars on
occasion to lessen the ascents or descents.
The tour starts at Schwarzenberg, a typical village in the
Bregenzerwald woods. We take a public bus up to Bodele (1140m)
with excellent views over the Bregenzerwald. A good trail heads
off leading to panoramas of the Swiss Alps and to Bodensee (Lake
Constance). You reach 1370m on forest trails before descending to
the village of Mellau. The third day is a long mountain trail
route, starting with a ride up on the Mellau cable car, you then
follow the ‘Kanisfluhweg’ path towards the Mittagspitze
(2095m) which fit walkers will be able to ascend in good weather.
There follows the descent to Damuls by foot or chair lift perhaps
for lunch before heading on the trail to Fontanella. The following
day there is a taxi transfer to Raggal from where a wanderweg path
takes us past charming alpine cottages. There is an option to
climb up to Hoher Frassen (1979m) before descending to Blundez.
From here we follow the ‘Romerweg’ trail past more alps
through Innerbraz, Gavaralpe and Mutheralpe then following an
attractive forest road into the villages of Mason and Dalaas. Our
sixth day takes us from Dalaas up to Kristberg, where you can stop
off at ‘Knappenstube’ or ‘Panoramarestaurant Kristberg’
before hiking on along another ‘Panoramaweg’ to Amaslegi and
then into the valley to Hotel Fernblick, from where you take the
public bus to Tschagguns. On the last walking day start early in
order to link up with the Golmerbahn cableway to reach the Gruneck
mountain station (1800m) to follow a delightful wanderweg to the
attractive ‘Lunersee’ lake. We end the day on the Lunerseebahn
cableway and then take the bus to Brand.
7
nights/8 days - Our first hotel 4* in Schwarzenberg
is a real gem with a 250 year long tradition. Even King Max of
Bavaria liked the place. Feel the charm of the turn of the 20th
century in the house’s drawing room and banqueting hall. All rooms
have a warm and cozy atmosphere. Excellent awarded, cuisine and
extraordinary wines are served. In the centre of Mellau we
use an attractive 3-star chalet style hotel with Alpine views to the
mountains all around. As a hotel guest you can use the indoor
swimming pool with hot whirl pool, sauna and steam bath free of
charge. In Fontanella our quality 3* hotel has en-suite
rooms, breakfast buffet, sauna, steam bath and a solarium. This is a
family hotel with a personal atmosphere, at an altitude of 1,200m in
the small mountain village that is surrounded by wonderful mountain
scenery. Our next hotel 3*, is situated on the natural sunny terrace
above Bludenz, only five minutes from the centre of this
small, romantic Alpine town. Enjoy famous Austrian food at one of
the most beautiful view points in the area. All rooms are equipped
with bathroom facilities, satellite TV etc. In Dalaas the 3*
hotel has 12 well equipped rooms, there is an original rustic dining
room dating back to the romantic period of horse drawn carriages and
there is an à la carte restaurant. At Tschagguns our 4*
hotel is well known for its hospitality. All rooms are decorated
with natural spruce wood. In Brand our 3* ‘sports’ hotel
is one of the most traditional but has a wide range of leisure time
facilities, indoor swimming pool, hot whirlpool, sauna, steam bath
and outdoor swimming pool.
