AROUND MEIRINGEN
Panorama's of the Swiss Alps
Meiringen is a perfect centre for walking in Switzerland, being situated at the convergence of three of Switzerland’s
major passes, Grimsel, Susten, and Brunig. A superb integrated network of
cablecars, postbuses and trams can take you in all directions reaching
spectacular locations quickly and easily. This small market town in the
Hasli Valley has every facility, yet remains unspoilt and typically Swiss
– a place for the discerning traveller who wants to see the real
Switzerland. The summer walking season stretches from May through to the
end of October but if you want to walk high on the mountains and over the
passes then it is best to wait until mid June. From the world of fiction Meiringen is home to the
Reichenbach Falls where Sherlock Holmes apparently fell to his death.
Walks from Meiringen encompass
all grades from gentle strolls to high ridges and even glacier
exploration. In the spring you can follow the melting snows into meadows
of glorious alpine flowers and butterflies. In summer the high ridges and
the rugged glacial scenery become accessible. In autumn the landscape is
painted with a riot of colour as the first frosts come. In winter, there
is the experience of walking through snow covered landscape. We have
developed a superb programme of beautiful walks in cooperation with the
local tourist board. The potential for walking in this area seems
limitless.
For this centre based holiday
you will be provided with an information pack which details walks
of varying difficulty, includes the maps you will need, ideas for the
numerous excursions and general information.
Besides the walking programmes,
Meiringen is the perfect place for numerous other activities, including

biking and cycle hire are also available. All followed by a visit to the
tearooms to sample meringues, as this is where they were invented.
