JBEL TOUBKAL

Classic 2-Week Trek in the High Atlas Mountains

Many people rush up Toubkal in a couple of days, but in the good ol’ days when there was less rush and more time, this was the standard ‘Tour de Mont Toubkal.’ It offers you an eclectic mixture of walking and fantastic views over sublime mountain landscapes encompassing all sides of Toubkal. You will even have a chance to swim in The Atlas’s only major lake, Lac d’ifni. This is an exotic tour that begins only three and a half hours from London!

Jbel Toubkal (4167m) is the highest summit in North Africa and the goal of the great majority of those who come to Morocco to walk in the mountains. It stands amongst some almost equally impressive summits, Jbel Angour, Jbel Oukaimden and Ouanakrim to name but a few. However, as well as the summit our itinerary takes us into the more secluded valleys and over some high, impressive passes neighbouring Toubkal less frequented by visitors. This is a challenging trek, involving the very best of the loftiest region of Morocco’s High Atlas chain. There is the added fascination of visiting some of the Berber settlements, clinging onto the mountain and morraine sides in precarious terrace formations. You also camp in transhumance pastures away from it all. Although essentially a camping tour, four nights are spent in basic hostels and three additional nights in our hotel in Marrakech. The schedule is quite relaxed, giving you plenty of time to acclimatize

Trekking in Morocco

A Sherpa trek in Morocco is a fully self-contained affair with a team of mules and their drivers accompanying the group through the mountains. Tents, cooking equipment, food and personal baggage are carried by the mules, leaving you to carry only a rucksack with whatever you need for the day. Berber muleteers are willing assistants helping with setting up camp and various chores. Each trek has its own Sherpa leader and a local Berber guide who speaks French, sometimes some English. Accommodation on trek is usually in spacious two-person tents; if however, bad weather strikes there is usually the option of staying in village houses or alpine huts. Morocco is one of the very few areas of the world where warm temperatures combine with an absence of insects to allow you to sleep outside. Nothing can compare with a night under the brilliant starlit skies of North Africa.
