 At
the western edge of Europe, Portugal has always been influenced above all
by the sea and its maritime empire lasted for 500 years. Islands
such as Madeira and the Azores still reflect this former glory and are
still politically, if not geographically connected to Portugal.
Nowadays,
of course, the Algarve in the south attracts the beach crowd,
whilst events such as the 'Euro '04 football Championship' have made
places like Lisbon popular for the 'weekend tourist'.
In
between these two areas are the mild lands of the Alentejo, the grain
basket of Portugal offering straight forward coastal and river side
walking or cycling in gentle, attractive surroundings.
You
don't have to stick to the mainland however! Our tour of Madeira including
some high mountain walking and some gentle Levada (irrigation canal)
trails, a walking destination that remains popular throughout the
year.
