 It
is sometimes claimed that no
other country encompasses such a variety of landscape, culture and history
in so small an area as France.
Our broad programme of escorted and self guided walks and
cycle rides aims to reflect something of the
variety and contrasts that France has to offer. From the snow peak views on The
Tour de Mont Blanc, to the granite spires of Corsica. From flattish
cycling in Bordeaux to the hills of Provence. From the rolling
vineyards of Burgundy and The Loire, to the forests of Alsace or the
castles of The Dordogne. Or from the glacial bastions of the Pyrenees to
the grassy plateaus and limestone gorges of the Cevennes. Then of course,
there is French village life, the colours and the characters: the fruit
market in Chinon, or the Flower market in Aix en Provence. People in
fields and vineyards picking, planting: tending to the time staid
countryside, shepherds tending to sheep, goats and cows on kempt Alpine
pastures. Places such as the Dordogne have layers of history, there are
literally the echoes of the Hundred Years War remaining in Architectural
shape and form and more reflections in place or street names. In other
areas you will feel something of the Cathar wars - the Albigensian Crusade
in Languedoc, or more recent boundary changes in Alsace.
On top of all this there is the cult of French cuisine:
the sauces, the confits. It is not always the case, but most restaurateurs
go to great lengths to prepare good food. We have of course not yet
mentioned the wines, well we will let you discover those in your own time,
but Burgundy is as good a place as any to start! There is literally
something in France for everyone.
Amongst the peaks of France's three great
mountain ranges - the Alps, Pyrenees and the island of Corsica - we offer
escorted high level treks. We also offer escorted versions of some more moderate
hotel based walks such as in Provence.
Sherpa also has a range of self-guided
walks and cycle rides. The Scottish
writer R L Stevenson originated the practice of self-guided walks in
France and then wrote a bio-guide book on his travels in the Cevennes.
Nowadays using the celebrated GR (long distance trail) network and it's
abundance of quiet rural roads, Sherpa's walking and cycling tours in France
continue this tradition, traversing the vast upland region known as the
Massif Central and the valleys of the great rivers - Loire, Dordogne,
Aveyron and Tarn - which radiate from it.
With cosmopolitan Paris at
its hub, getting around France by TGV, regional train or internal flights is
usually easy and reasonably priced. La
France vous Attend!
