Atlas Mountains with Sherpa Expeditions

The wild and remote beauty of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco provides the perfect destination for a classic trekking holiday. The scenery and ambiance of the Atlas Mountains is much different to anything else you may have encountered before.

To the south the Atlas Mountains ripple into the lower Jebel Sahro which eventually merges into the Sahara desert. Sherpa's Atlas Mountain treks to these places commence from the red city of Marrakech, a place that used to be the hub of an empire that stretched as far as Timbuktu in Mali. It is an amazing place where in the central square, The Djemma El Efna you will find a mediaeval spectacle every evening with music, snake charmers, acrobats, orange juice makers and kebab cooks.

Marrakech is a delightful start to any journey into the Atlas Mountains. In winter the snow-clad peaks of the High Atlas Mountains provide a backdrop to its distinctive skyline of crenellated walls, palm trees and minarets. From here it is a short drive to the vicinity of Jbel Toubkal, the most popular area for trekking in the Atlas Mountains.

All of Sherpa's tours of the Atlas Mountains begin and end in Marrakech and include a new self guided trek as well as the traditional high peak escorted tours. The routes are not arduous, and you will find plenty of time to explore villages and consume the odd glass or two of mint tea... maybe even three!

Escorted treks of the Atlas Mountains

Sherpa run 3 different escorted treks of the Atlas Mountains. Each one is two weeks long, and is a fully self-contained affair with a team of mules and their drivers accompanying the group through the Atlas Mountains. Tents, cooking equipment, food and personal baggage are carried by the mules, leaving you to carry only a daypack with whatever you need for the day. Berber muleteers are willing assistants with setting up camp and various chores. Each Atlas Mountains trek has its own Sherpa leader and a local Berber guide who speaks French, sometimes some English.

Atlas Mountains self guided tours

If you have ever dreamed of exploring the beautiful Atlas Mountains in your own time and at your own pace then you should consider one of Sherpa's Atlas Mountains self guided tours. This is a self guided tour in the broadest sense of the word because you will be accompanied by both a donkey who carries your baggage, and a Berber guide who will tend to steer you in the right direction however you may interpret the notes! An ideal combination for a unique and memorable all year round break under the big Atlas Mountains skies.
